Definitely cool. Butter WOULD NOT melt in that room. They're probably laughin as they decide whose girlfriend they're taking home after the show.
The late 60's was the last gasp of the days when celebs looked larger than life and always came out dressed to impress. That's showbiz.

This photo was probably taken by Time/Life photographer Bob Peterson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Peterson_%28photographer%29).
A search in the Hulton Archive (available through Getty Images http://www.gettyimages.com) will show you a couple photos from this definitively cool moment, including one of James Brown dancing and Joe Namath bugging out. You may know all this already, since it's been like 6 years since you asked!
