You've been a fantastic caregiver, and I'm so grateful for everything you've done to ease my recovery!

    Eric Pennington

    Wonderful insights.

Isn't it great that "giving" is a part of the word caregiving? I wish Amy the best in her recovery.

Having been the recipient of care from my late husband after I had shoulder surgery ten years ago, and then being his caregiver five years later, I can relate to both of you in this situation. You captured the issues very well, Ed, and I applaud you both.

The care my husband gave me was an inspiration to me when it was my turn to care for him, and one of the important lessons I learned was about the Little Things. My husband brought me home after surgery and got me safely installed in bed. The bedroom was in the lower level of our split-level townhouse, and Bruce had opened the curtains so I could look out on the greenbelt that ran behind our building. I was resting in a bit of a daze, and the next thing I knew, a giant pot of hot pink petunias was slowly being lowered from the upper level balcony. It did hurt to laugh, but it felt good, too.

It sounds like you have a good handle on the Little Things as well as the big things, although sometimes it's hard to tell them apart. Rock on.

Thanks, Eric--I appreciate it, and Amy's doing well.

And thank you, Susan--what a beautiful memory. It makes me realize that everything Amy and I are going through now affects us in the long term, not only in terms of her recovery but also as a challenging (and rewarding) shared experience.
